He didn’t Institute it though. It was Obama if I remember correctly
This is referring to the zero tolerance policy that was enacted under Trump. It is why it is next to impossible to seek asylum the legal way, why there are so many people trying to enter illegally, why there are so many complaints revolving around the system, and why “child concentration camps” is heard commonly.
During the Obama Administration, only unaccompanied children were picked up by authorities at the border: those who could be returned to their country of origin were, and those who could not were placed in the Department of Health and Human services. Separating families was not an issue—and by that, I don’t mean it never occurred ever, I just mean it was unheard of, for the most part.
As for immigration in general, it has existed long before either the Obama or Trump Administration. The problem is that (again, mainly because of this new zero tolerance policy) it has become inhumane when a humane immigration system is possible, like it was in the past—this is also a reason that some people compare Trump to Hitler because this is being done unnecessarily harsh. When Democrats complain about the current state of immigration, we aren’t calling for open borders, or even calling to end it: we are asking that the humane system is brought back. (But also, know that if he ends it and claims to be a savior of any kind, he is only solving a problem that his administration created: it might’ve even been a scheme to win people over. Who knows.)
