The Feminist Library on Loan at The Showroom

This summer the Feminist Library will take up residence in contemporary art space The Showroom, located near Edgware Rd, bringing elements of the Library’s fascinating collection to new audiences and offering a programme of free events.



A variety of different workshops will run throughout the month. All workshops are free and are open to self-identified women and non-binary people, unless otherwise specified. Priority will be given to residents in the borough of Westminster.

Biodanza for women of colour
Saturday 21st July, 3pm – 4pm

Biodanza, the dance of life, explores the connection between the body, emotions and spirituality through free body movements and self-exploration.

Women of Westminster Workshops
Saturday 21st, 28thJuly, 4thAugust, 11am – 2pm

A series of three workshops for local women to explore their experience in the area and its history and
produce a collaborative book. Gain skills in research, writing, interviewing, drawing and photography.

Housing Discussion
Thursday 26thJuly, 7:30pm – 9pm

Open discussion on housing and gentrification. Different campaigners will share ideas and give mutual support. Drop-in. Open to all.

Young People’s Writing Workshop
Wednesday 1stAugust, 12pm – 3pm

Headshot - Holly Whitaker 1st March 2018 03Join artist Liv Wynter in a writing workshop on gender, self-expression and sexuality. Participants will create a collaborative zine and will be able to perform at the closing event. Open to young women and non-binary people aged 12 and up.

Liv Wynter (b 1992) is an artist, educator, activist and writer from South London. She graduated from BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths in 2015 and has since become a notable voice within the political art scene. She was Artist in Residence at Tate Britain and Tate Modern on the Education Programme for 2017-18, until she resigned to protest the invisible inequalities of the institution.

Creative Writing Workshops: Identity in Multicultural Societies

Friday 3rd, Saturday 4thAugust, 12pm – 6pm

Join poet and psychologist Sina Sujatha Schwache to explore identity in multicultural societies through creative writing. You will produce your own piece of writing that you will be able to perform at the closing event.

Saturday 11thAugust, 2pm – 6pm

The project will culminate with a community party open to everyone on Saturday 11th August, featuring food from local women entrepreneurs as well as presentations of creative work produced during the workshops. Open to all.

The Showroom’s gallery space will be transformed into a pop-up Library, featuring materials from the Feminist Library’s collection for visitors to browse, comfy seating, tea-making facilities and kids’ activities. Minna Haukka, the Feminist Library’s current artist in residence will create a new art installation for the space, taking inspiration from the Library.

Open to all members of the public from Weds-Saturday, the space will offer a place for discussions, creativity and meeting new people.

Also taking place within the space will be Expressions, a group exhibition by young self-identified women of colour.

The Feminist Library on Loan at The Showroom and Expressions are part of Create Church Street, which seeks to engage the local area with the arts. Funded by Westminster City Council.
